The History of Coconut

MCT coconut oil has a fascinating history, as does coconut and coconut water. I will explore and introduce you to the benefits of coconut, it’s oils and how to make bulletproof coffee using MCT Brain Octane Oil . This is a pure extract from coconut. I provide links to sites I have found helpful in understanding this great food source.

According to  http://coconutoil.com/  the history of coconuts goes back thousands of years. This link provides a wealth of information on coconut, it’s history, research and benefits. Below is a great quote regarding the history of coconut.

“Coconut oil was once prevalent in western countries like the United States. With a long shelf life and a melting point of 76 degrees, coconut oil was a favorite in the baking industry.

But a negative campaign against saturated fats in general, and coconut oil in particular, led to most food manufacturers abandoning coconut oil in recent years in favor of hydrogenated polyunsaturated oils that come from the main government-subsidized cash crops in the US, particularly corn and soy. These hydrogenated oils contain trans fatty acids. The polyunsaturated oils were not a big part of the diet of previous generations, so how has the health of Americans changed now that polyunsaturated oils are for the most part all one finds on supermarket shelves across the US? We encourage you to take an honest look at the research presented on this website, and consider the “other side” of the story, whether it be coconut oil, saturated fats, cholesterol, or the new vegetable oils!”

Nutritional Benefits of Coconut

Coconut has many benefits, but unfortunately the western culture has underestimated it’s nutritious health benefits.  Other cultures in the tropics, and Asia have used coconut as a staple in their foods for centuries According to NutritionData.com one cup of shredded coconut has the following nutrients:

The Benefits of MCT Coconut Oil

We will now take a closer look at the coconut oil, specifically MCT.  Note that  coconut and coconut oils have been used beneficially  by many cultures of the world for thousands of years.

There are three basic kinds of fat in coconut oils: Long Chain Triglycerides (LCT), Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT), and Short Chain SCT).   For the sake of this discussion, we will focus on the differences between MCT, and LCT oils. And why a good MCT oil is better. Coconut oil is a saturated fat. However, as mention above, the different chain triglycerides in the oil metabolize differently in the body. Numerous research has identified the MCT as metabolizing much easier in the body. In comparison, the LCT  ends up being stored as fat. MCT fat provides  immediate energy, stimulating the body’s metabolism, and according to many, may provide a source for weight loss. Here is an excerpt about MCT and Metabolism in a PubMed article

“Experimental studies demonstrate that dietary MCFAs/MCTs suppress fat deposition through enhanced thermogenesis and fat oxidation in animal and human subjects. Additionally, several reports suggest that MCFAs/MCTs offer the therapeutic advantage of preserving insulin sensitivity in animal models and patients with type 2 diabetes.”

MCT coconut oil for BulletProof Coffee

I’m sure you have seen or heard of bullet proof coffee by now. Recently it appears to have gained popularity.  The man behind the popular coffee concoction was Dave Asprey, a tech entrepreneur who says this brew suppresses hunger, promotes weight loss, and improves energy and performance. Plus it is said to  boost brainpower.

I personally have started making it using The Brain Octane Oil, which is a good source of MCT coconut oil.  In short, bulletproof coffee has three basic ingredients. This is how I use it.

  1.  One mug of black brewed coffee

  2. 1-2 tablespoons of organic butter from grass-fed cows

  3. 1 Tablespoon of Brain Octane Oil

  4. Add hot coffee, butter, and oil together, and blend for 15-20 seconds. You may add any sweetener, cocoa powder or cinnamon. to taste. The result is a great bullet proof coffee latte.

After experimenting with different flavoring, and sweeteners., I have learned to enjoy the drink. Hopefully you have been inspired as much as I have about the great benefits of MCT coconut oil.  Until next time, “Be Well and Stay Healthy.”
